Web design plans a website's layout, content hierarchy and visitor experience. Web development builds the working pages and behaviour. A business website usually needs both, but a quote may include only one. Ask who supplies the design, builds and tests the site, connects enquiry routes, publishes it and hands over ownership.

Web design plans what visitors see and how they move through your website. Web development turns that plan into working pages, interactions and connections to other systems. For a South African service business, the buying question is whether the quote covers the complete journey from finding your service to sending an enquiry.

Start with our website budget guide, then check the responsibilities below. Two providers can use the same service name while quoting different work.

What web design should resolve

Design covers more than colours. It decides which information appears first, how services are grouped, where evidence belongs and how a visitor finds the next action. Branding supplies the visual identity; website design applies it to a usable interface. A website build does not automatically include creating your logo or brand guidelines.

For a Pretoria cleaning company, a useful design might put service areas, types of cleaning and evidence of completed work ahead of a long company history. A customer using a phone should be able to understand the offer and find the contact route. This is an illustrative buying example, not a reported client result.

Ask whether you will approve page layouts, a clickable prototype or the working site itself. None of those review formats guarantees quality. The quote should identify the review format, included revision rounds and the point at which changes affect the fee.

What web development should deliver

Front-end development builds the interface that runs in the browser. Back-end work handles server-side processing such as storing submissions, authenticating users or connecting an external system. A brochure website may need little custom back-end work. A customer portal needs a separate functional specification.

A visible form is not proof that enquiries reach your business. Confirm its destination and test delivery. If the contact route opens WhatsApp or the visitor’s email app, specify that behaviour rather than describing it as a stored form submission.

Use this design and development responsibility matrix

This is a buyer checklist we recommend using alongside a quote. Responsibilities can overlap, especially when one person handles the complete build.

Deliverable Design decision Development check What you approve
Service page Order of offer, proof and action Layout works at narrow widths Customers can understand the service
Navigation Labels and grouping Menu opens and works by keyboard Main pages are reachable
Contact route Fields and instructions Validation, failure state and delivery A real test reaches its destination
Images Selection, crop and context Appropriate sizes and alternative text Images are accurate and readable
Search foundations Useful page titles and headings Metadata and indexable pages Each page has a distinct purpose
Handover Editing needs and responsibilities Access and deployment documentation You know who owns each account

Accessible forms need clear labels connected to their controls. W3C’s form guidance explains why labels help people identify and operate inputs. A placeholder that disappears when you type is insufficient as the only label.

Do you need a designer, a developer or both?

If you already have approved layouts, content and brand assets, you may mainly need implementation. Give the developer those materials before requesting a quote. Ask who resolves missing mobile layouts and interaction states.

If your site functions correctly but customers struggle to understand the offer, start with a content and design review. Implementation may still be needed to apply the changes. Our redesign decision guide helps separate a local fix from a rebuild.

If you are launching a new business website, request a combined scope. You can hire one studio or separate specialists, provided somebody owns the handover between design and implementation. Get five-page package inclusions in writing rather than relying on the page count.

Questions to ask before accepting a quote

Ask the provider: “What will I receive at design approval, what will work at launch, and what will I own afterwards?” Request a demonstration of the intended enquiry flow. Confirm whether copywriting, branding, hosting, domain registration and maintenance are included or separately priced.

Agree who fixes a mismatch between approved layouts and the delivered site. Also identify who can update your content after handover. Our website ownership checklist covers domain and hosting access.

Discuss a complete business website scope

IDJoy’s website design and development service combines page planning, responsive front-end development and launch work for South African service businesses. Custom systems and extra requirements need their own scope. Bring your page list, brand assets and intended contact route so we can identify the work your project needs.
