Referral commission pays a percentage of a project that closes. On IDJoy's five-page website at R4,199, ten percent is R419.90. On the R15,208.60 bundle it is R1,520.86. You earn nothing for signing up and nothing for introductions that do not close. A real programme charges no joining fee, sells you nothing, and does not ask you to recruit others.

Statistics South Africa put youth unemployment at 45.8 percent in the first quarter of 2026, for the 15 to 34 age group, on the official definition. Under the expanded definition, which counts people who have given up looking, the picture is worse.

If you are in that number you have had a WhatsApp about earning money from home. Most of those messages are lying to you, and a few of them will take your money.

This article is about a referral commission, which is one of the honest ways to earn without capital. It contains the real rand figures, including the ones that make it sound smaller than you hoped. It also contains a checklist for telling a real programme from a pyramid scheme, which is worth reading whether or not you ever work with us.

What a referral commission is

You introduce a business to a company that sells something that business needs. If that business becomes a client, you get a percentage of what they paid.

That is the whole mechanism. No stock, no capital, no subscription. You are paid for the introduction, and only when the introduction turns into a paying client.

We run one of these. IDJoy builds websites, brand identities and business email for South African businesses, and we pay partners ten percent of the project value on anything that closes, rising to fifteen percent once you have brought us eight projects.

The real numbers, including the small ones

Our prices are published, so the commission is arithmetic rather than a promise.

Look at the top row. Four hundred and nineteen rand is a tank of petrol and some data. It is not rent.

Read the bottom row too. Fifteen hundred rand for one conversation with somebody who already needed a website is a different proposition, and it takes the same amount of work as the four hundred.

What it does not pay

Three things, because the messages in your WhatsApp will not mention them.

Signing up pays nothing. There is no bonus for joining, no reward for completing a profile, no payment for watching a video. If a programme pays you to sign up, the money is coming from the next person who signs up, and that is the definition of the thing you should run from.

Introductions that do not close pay nothing. You might introduce five businesses and have none of them buy. That is a normal month, more so at the start. We tell you at each stage what happened, so you learn which introductions were worth making, but a conversation that goes nowhere earns nothing.

There is no salary underneath it. This is commission on real work by real businesses. On a quiet month you earn nothing. Anyone who tells you a referral programme is a reliable income is selling you something.

What the work looks like

Three conversations.

The first is noticing. A business card with a Gmail address on it. A Facebook page with no website. A flyer with a WhatsApp number and nothing else. A salon whose customers cannot find their prices. Each one of those is a specific problem you can name out loud, and naming a specific problem is the whole skill.

The second is the introduction. One message. You are not selling anything, quoting anything or promising anything. You are saying: I know somebody who fixes this, want me to connect you.

The third is logging it. You open the dashboard, put in the business name and a contact number, and we take it from there. That step reserves the client to you for 180 days, so no one else can claim the introduction you made.

That is the job. We do the calling, the quoting, the building and the invoicing.

How to tell a real programme from a pyramid scheme

Keep this list. It applies to any opportunity that arrives in your messages, not only ours.

A real programme does not charge you to join. No registration fee, no starter pack, no training course, no “activation” payment. Any money moving from you to them at the start is the warning sign that matters most. Pyramid schemes are prohibited under the Consumer Protection Act, and the National Consumer Commission takes reports.

A real programme pays you nothing for recruiting. If your earnings depend on signing up other people rather than selling something to an end customer, the money has to come from those recruits. That is a pyramid regardless of what the presentation calls it.

A real programme sells something a customer would want anyway. Ask what the actual product is and who buys it for its own sake. If the only buyers are people inside the scheme, there is no product.

A real programme publishes its prices. If you cannot see what the customer pays, you cannot calculate what you earn, which means the number they quoted you is decoration.

A real programme puts the terms in writing before you start. Commission rate, when it is paid, what happens if a client cancels. In writing, before you introduce anybody.

A real programme is honest about the bad months. Anybody showing you screenshots of income but none of a quiet month has selected the evidence.

Our own answers, so you can hold us to the list: no joining fee ever, no recruitment component at all, we sell websites to businesses that come looking for them, our prices are on the pricing page, the terms are on the agreement you accept before your code goes live, and the numbers in the table above include the four hundred rand row.

Who this suits

It suits you if you already talk to small business owners. If you work in a salon, a hardware shop, a taxi rank, a church, a sports club, a campus society, you already know twenty people running something. That network is the asset, and you already own it.

It suits you if you can wait. The first project might close six weeks after the conversation that started it. Money arrives after the client pays us, not when you make the introduction.

It suits you less if you need money this week. Nothing in this article solves that, and pretending otherwise would repeat the dishonesty this article argues against.

What we will not ask you to do

We will not ask you to pay anything. We will not ask you to recruit other partners. We will not ask you to buy stock, hold inventory, or complete a paid course. We will not ask you to post a testimonial about money you have not earned.

If anybody claiming to represent us asks you for money, they do not represent us.

How to start

Register on the partner page, fill in your company or your own details, and accept the terms. We review applications by hand, most often inside a working day. When you are approved you get a referral code, a link to share, and a playbook with the actual words to use in a first message.

Then find one business with a problem you can name. One is the target. Everything else follows from whether you can do it once.

Register as a partner and see the numbers against your own name.
